How to make a pet insurance claim

Published on

Just like humans, cats and dogs can face unexpected health challenges that require medical attention. By investing in pet insurance, you reduce the financial burden of vet bills while making better decisions for your pet.

Once your pet is insured, it’s crucial to understand pet insurance claims. Familiarising yourself with the specific details, such as coverage limits, deductibles, and other pet insurance terms, ensures you know what to expect when seeking veterinary care.

About pet insurance claims

Whether it’s a routine check-up or an unexpected pet emergency, having a clear understanding of how the claims process works can help you avoid delays and unnecessary stress.

This peace of mind allows you to focus on keeping your pet happy and healthy.

A standout feature when making a claim with Knose is its no sub-limits policy, which means there are no caps on specific treatments within your annual limit.

This simplifies the claims process and gives you the flexibility to claim for any eligible treatment, without worrying about hitting smaller limits for individual conditions or services.

This flexibility can make a significant difference when it comes to accessing timely and extensive care for your pet.

Steps to make a pet insurance claim

Submitting a claim with Knose is a paperless and straightforward process designed with pet owners in mind. Follow these steps to ensure your online claim is processed quickly and efficiently.

  1. Log into Your Knose Portal from any device.
  2. Select the Pet’s policy if you have more than one.
  3. Select “New Claim”.
  4. Upload or take a photo of your paid invoice and answer the questions.
  5. Click submit. You’re done in a few minutes!

Alternatively, you can ask your vet to make a claim for you.  They’ll have to email a copy of the invoice and clinical notes to claims@knose.com.au.

Once our system has received your claim, we’ll contact your vet to confirm your pet insurance claim. Most vets respond within three (3) business days. Don’t worry, we’ll follow up with your vet for you, and keep you updated!

💡 If this is your first time submitting a claim, we’ll contact your pet’s previous vets for a full medical history. This way, we’ll understand your pet’s condition better. If your pet has already completed a pre-existing condition assessment, we’ll skip this step.

Our Australian-based assessment team will then review your claim. If approved, we’ll calculate the benefit payable. The benefit percentage you chose for Knose Pet Insurance determines how much of the vet costs we cover, up to your policy’s annual limit.

Example:

Benefit percentage70%80%90%
Claims cost$1,000$1,000$1,000
We Pay$700$800$900
You Pay$300$200$100

We’ll finalise the amount and transfer the funds directly to your account. In most cases, we settle your pet insurance claim directly with you.

We can pay your vet or service provider only if you request it and they approve direct payment, or if we decide to do so at our discretion.

How long does the claims process take?

While we strive to process pet insurance claims as quickly as possible, we cannot guarantee a specific timeline. Each claim is unique, and the time it takes to review depends on the complexity of the case. Here’s a quick overview:

  • Lodge: Making a pet insurance claim only takes a few minutes! We then contact your vet to verify your claim, which usually takes 2-3 business days.
  • Initial Check: We check your claim within two (2) business days if we require further information from your vet.
  • Assess: Our assessment team reviews your claim within five (5) business days of receiving all necessary information. We contact you right away once the assessment is complete.
  • Settle: We communicate the assessment outcome to you and process the payment within the business day.

In some cases, additional documentation may be required, or further investigation into the pet’s medical history might be necessary, which can extend the review time.

Rest assured, we work diligently to resolve claims as swiftly as possible while ensuring thorough assessments.

10/10 to Knose!
In January, we  brought a puppy (Bella) into our lives – she is beautiful!  Recently she had a few gastro issues and subsequent vet visits. Knose Pet Insurance has been awesome. They acknowledged the claims immediately, and then followed up with personal emails advising us of the progress of our claims. We even received a message asking after Bella and a follow up to say how pleased they were that Bella is now doing well. Top class personalized service and a thorough explanation of the claim refunds. 10/10 guys!

Tips for a smooth claims process

Here are a few helpful tips to ensure your pet insurance claim goes through without a hitch!

  1. Keep your pet’s medical records

This should include all vet invoices, diagnostic reports, and any treatment-related documentation. To be safe, include all records of communication with your vet regarding your pet’s health.

Having these documents readily available makes it easier to submit accurate claims and minimises the chances of delays due to missing information.

  1. Submit pet insurance claims early

The sooner you submit your claim after your pet’s treatment, the quicker it will be processed.

Prompt submission helps prevent any complications that could arise from delays, such as difficulty obtaining medical records or changes in vet practices.

Submitting claims as early as possible ensures a faster reimbursement, reducing the risk of administrative issues.
