Pet Insurance Guide – Key Considerations When Choosing a Plan

These information snippets help pet owners understand how different insurers compare and where Knose stands out.

Many insurers cover accidents and illnesses but may exclude dental, behavioural, or alternative treatments. Knose offers comprehensive coverage with optional add-ons like dental illness, behavioural conditions, and specialised therapies—so you can tailor your policy to your pet’s unique needs.

Learn more

Some insurers lock you into a fixed reimbursement percentage or lower annual caps. With Knose, you choose your benefit percentage (70%, 80%, or 90%) and annual limit (up to $25,000), ensuring flexibility based on your budget and risk comfort level.

All pet insurance policies come with exclusions, but Knose keeps it simple and transparent. Knose has a 1-day waiting period for accidental injuries, 14 days for illnesses, and 6 months for specified conditions, behavioural issues, and dental illnesses (14 days for pets under 1 year). Any condition that arises during these periods is considered pre-existing and won’t be covered. You can expand coverage with optional extras, such as dental illness, behavioural conditions, and specialised therapies.

Knose allows you to choose your excess level ($0, $100, or $200 annually), giving you control over how much you pay out-of-pocket before insurance kicks in. Unlike some insurers that charge per claim excesses, Knose applies excess annually—meaning you won’t be hit with repeated costs for ongoing conditions.

Some insurers impose treatment-specific caps, such as limits on vet consultations or physiotherapy sessions. Knose has no sub-limits on standard vet treatments, meaning your total annual benefit limit applies across all conditions and treatments.

Learn more

Many insurers impose sub-limits—caps on claim amounts—for treatments of specific conditions, including:

  • Cruciate Ligament Conditions: Injuries to the ligaments in the knee.
  • Tick Paralysis: A potentially fatal condition caused by tick bites.
  • Dental Illness: Issues related to oral health.
  • Hip Dysplasia: A genetic condition affecting the hip joints.

In contrast, Knose does not apply sub-limits to these conditions, allowing you to utilise your full annual benefit limit for any covered treatment.

Some insurers require paperwork-heavy claims that can take weeks to process. Knose provides a simple digital claims process, and most claims are processed within a few days. No need for excessive back-and-forth—just submit and let us handle the rest.

Insurance premiums increase as pets age, but the rate and frequency vary by insurer. Knose maintains a fair and predictable approach to premium adjustments, ensuring pet owners aren’t caught off guard by unexpected hikes.

Knose allows you to customise your policy by selecting a benefit percentage (70%, 80%, or 90%), an annual limit (up to $25,000), and optional extras like dental illness, behavioural conditions, and specialised therapies. This flexibility helps tailor coverage to your budget and your pet’s specific needs.

Limitations to Policy Changes

  • You cannot increase your annual limit after purchasing your policy; you can only decrease it.
  • The benefit percentage can only be increased at renewal, but you can decrease it at any time.
  • Optional extras can only be added when your pet is under 3 years old and cannot be removed later.
  • Adjustments to the annual excess (if selected) can only be made at renewal.
  • If you switch from another insurer, Knose may waive waiting periods for injury and illness, provided the coverage is equal or lesser, and your previous policy was active for at least 12 months.

Most Australian pet insurers don’t offer 24/7 vet support outside of an insurance policy. Knose stands out by making expert advice accessible to all pet owners—free for members and available to non-members for just $8.88/month with no lock-in contracts. Whether insured or not, pet owners can get professional vet advice anytime, anywhere.

Best pet insurance company in Australia!

Thanks to Knose our cat Louis is alive after kidney failure and a bypass operation. Without insurance it would have been too expensive to proceed.  Knose has paid the claims promptly and the service team has been excellent in responding to our queries.

Knose has been a great choice for pet insurance. The premiums are relatively affordable, claims are super easy to make by just uploading vet invoices, and the 24 hour phoneline that connects you with a vet nurse is a brilliant feature.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why should I consider pet insurance for my cat or kitten?

It’s common for cats to require veterinary attention at some point in their lives, and the severity and cost of such care can be unpredictable. Our cat insurance is designed to provide extensive coverage for unexpected injuries and illnesses your cat or kitten may face. Knose offers extensive plans catering to cats and kittens living with you in Australia. We prioritise your cat’s well-being and don’t impose sub-limits, ensuring they have access to veterinary treatment whenever they need it most.

We don’t provide cover for certain cat breeds that are considered dangerous or banned in Australia. If your cats breed falls under this category after purchasing or renewing the policy, they will no longer be eligible, and we will send you a notice of non-renewal before the expiration of your current Period of Insurance.

Moreover, cats engaged in commercial or sporting activities, such as breeding, working, fighting, racing, personal protection, gun sports, law enforcement, or guarding, are not eligible for coverage. However, there are exceptions, and we do provide cover for pets engaged in specific activities like show cats, etc.

Our insurance for cats and kittens cover accidents, injuries, illnesses, and even essential euthanasia. You can also add optional extras like dental illness, behavioural conditions, and specialised therapies to suit your pet’s unique needs.

Check what we cover and what we don’t cover ↗

We welcome cats and kittens as young as six (6) weeks and up to eight (8) years and 364 days old. For cats younger than three years, you can also add optional extras. And once your cat is covered, there are no age limits for renewals.

We believe in keeping things simple and flexible. With Knose, you won’t encounter any sub-limits, so you can claim for eligible vet bills up to the annual limit. You can choose from various Annual Limits of $7,500, $12,500, or $25,000, and Benefit Percentages of 70%, 80%, or 90% to suit your unique needs.

No, we don’t cover desexing, grooming, or training services for cats as these are considered routine and elective care. Our pet insurance for cats and kittens is designed to step in when unexpected accidents or illnesses occur, giving you peace of mind when it matters most.

No, routine and preventative care like vaccinations, check-ups, and grooming aren’t covered. We focus on helping with the unexpected, so our insurance provides support when your cat or kitten needs medical care due to an illness or injury.
